Full-time Funeral Director/Embalmer or Apprentice
Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home and Crematory - Sidney, OH
We have an opening for a full-time funeral director and embalmer licensee or apprentice. We would like this to be someone who is either from this area, or someone looking to plant roots in our community hoping to establish a long-term career. This job would involve all facets of the funeral industry, including funeral directing, embalming, crematory operations, day-to-day office duties, facility and vehicle upkeep, and miscellaneous tasks. New employee would be assigned to a two-person crew. While the schedule is unpredictable, occasionally busy and sometimes hectic, employees work a very reasonable schedule. Residing in Sidney would be a requirement.
Experience
- Apprentices: preferred that applicant has some familiarity of the business; a minimum of two years history/experience in the funeral service industry.
- Crematory operating knowledge is not a requirement, but certainly welcomed • Licensees: Minimum 2 years of experience as an Embalmer/Funeral Director.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Being on-call: aside from normal working hours, on-call responsibilities are every other night, and every other weekend. Must be within 1/2 hour response time while on-call.
- Conducting transfers: it is required that the employee will be physically able to lift, and capable of carrying out removals from homes with a colleague, as well as on their own from nursing facilities or hospitals.
- Taking first calls
- Answering initial questions of families • Providing initial details • Supervising and respectfully caring for deceased.
- Embalming, after obtaining authorization for embalming • Restoring • Dressing, cosmetic work • Meeting with families for arrangements as needed
Funeral Directing Responsibilities
- Arranging and conducting funeral and memorial ceremonies in a professional, organized and caring manner consistent with company policies and procedures • Negotiates and enters into funeral contracts • Handles contracts, legal documents, and collection of payment in accordance with company policies.
- Ensures client families are informed of special recognition/services available for veterans and ensures the delivery of selected recognition/services.
- Arranges for the interment or cremation of human remains • Adheres to all company and regulatory requirements • Completing at-need and pre-need insurance assignments.
- Assisting families with insurance claims • Completes and accurately prepares of all documents related to services, cremations, maintenance, and any other type of data entry; prepares reports as necessary • Active involvement with community, religious and other organizations.
- Preparing cremated remains, including container selection, paperwork and identification procedures
Assisting Responsibilities
- Supervising the parking of cars
- Ushering
- Driving funeral vehicles
- Assisting at chapel and church services • Assisting at the cemetery • Delivering flowers, urns, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of families following services • Setting up chairs and the removing, properly caring for and storing of these items • Participating at special functions • Assist with general office duties • Assist with the maintenance of vehicles, facility and property • Receives caskets and other funeral home supplies and places into inventory • Performs other duties as assigned
Education Requirements & Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Completion of a dual degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral AND mortuary science.
Certification/Licenses
- Must meet all licensing requirement in the state of Ohio • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Able to follow instructions and take constructive criticism.
- Basic knowledge of religious and fraternal organizations.
- Knowledge of computers and some software including MS Office • High level of compassion and integrity • Good communication skills • Problem solving skills • Ability to multi task and set priorities
