This session provides a practical, funeral service-specific approach to workplace ethics, aimed at helping professionals create a supportive work environment that encourages long-term retention. By addressing the key factors contributing to the loss of new licensees, attendees will learn strategies to foster positive organizational culture and promote ethical leadership.

Drawing on recent research into funeral director attrition and retention, the presentation highlights how ethical decision-making can enhance leadership practices and engage teams more effectively. Participants will discover how applying core ethical principles can build a more connected and ethical workforce within funeral service.

This program will empower funeral professionals with the tools to promote ethical leadership and improve retention in their organizations.

Learning Objectives:

Ethical decision-making often involves navigating choices between competing values or outcomes. Participants will gain an understanding of core ethical principles and how these can be applied to leadership in the workplace to combat the challenges of high attrition rates. Dr. Tyler J. O'Brien is an author, catechist, educator, and funeral director. He is licensed in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan. He is a member of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practitioners and is a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner. He is also a Certified Cremation Service Provider through the National Funeral Directors Association. Dr. O'Brien earned an Associate of Applied Sciences and a Bachelor of Mortuary Sciences from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He earned a Master of Arts in Theology from Lourdes University and later a Doctor of Education from the University of the Cumberlands. He is employed as a funeral director and embalmer serving the Toledo, OH community. Dr. O'Brien has served in various leadership roles and committees on Christian education and faith formation programs within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, is the Director of
