President's Message

Greetings ORWAC Members,

Happy New Year! I would like to personally invite you to attend the Western States Communication Association (WSCA) Convention in Salt Lake City, UT from February 18-21, 2017. ORWAC is sponsoring the pre-conference, “From Margin to Center: Feminist Inquiry in the Communication Discipline” on Saturday, February 18th. We are also sponsoring six panel and paper sessions during the WSCA Convention, including ORWAC’s Top Four Paper session on Sunday, February 19th at 9:00am. Don’t forget to attend our Business Meeting and social on February 19th at 5:45pm. At the Business Meeting, we will have elections to fill the position of  Graduate Student Representative.

Marnel GoinsI am ecstatic that ORWAC is sponsoring WSCA’s keynote speaker, Black Lives Matter Ambassador Janaya Khan. She will be speaking on Sunday, February 19th at 2:45pm. We’ll continue the conversation with Janaya on Sunday at 4:15pm in an ORWAC-sponsored panel entitled, “Centralizing Marginality Through Protest and Activism.”  Please join us!

The WSCA Convention is sure to be an exciting event, but ORWAC has more things in store this year. The application deadline for the ORWAC research development grants is at the beginning of April (see www.orwac.org for more information). Also, four issues of Women’s Studies in Communication will be published this year by our Editor, Joan Faber McAlister, and Editor-elect, Kristen Hoerl.

I trust that 2017 will continue to be an exciting year of opportunity and growth for us individually, and as an organization. See you in Salt Lake City
