POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Public Relations Specialist reports to the Business Administrator and works directly and collaboratively with the Executive Director and the ACDJFS Senior Leadership. This role provides high-level agency support including serving as the initial point of contact for the office of the Executive Director; performs agency public relations activities and develops, implements, and evaluates effective communication strategies that provide the community with the information needed to take advantage of social programs; uses substantial judgment and independent decision-making authority and exhibits a high degree of professionalism.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Job duties in order of importance
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE JOB
Manages all public relations activities; creates communications for the Agency and other professional constituents for print use, websites, social media, etc.; develops a strategic public information plan which is reviewed and updated annually; develops an annual plan for Agency projects and community events; establishes a budget for marketing and events and monitors expenses; takes lead on special projects for the Agency that advance its mission; implements new processes and procedures that improve efficiencies within all aspects of ACDJFS; manages routine and non-routine functions that support the work of the Agency; prepares various reports including an annual report to the community; assesses and resolves concerns and problems directed to the Executive Director’s office and/or determines the recommended course of action to delegate to the appropriate person to manage; acts on the behalf of and in the absence of the Executive Director for public events and outreach activities.
Actively seeks and applies for grants and outside funding opportunities. Administers and coordinates the Agency’s nonprofit organization. Oversees the coordination of program events (guest speakers, conferences, meetings) and the development and distribution of marketing and press releases for ACDJFS; participates in advisory committees, department head meetings, and other Agency and administrative committees as needed.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties as assigned. May be required to perform duties under supervision of the Athens County Red Cross during an emergency, in accordance with the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity Plans.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERSITICS:

Knowledge of: Public relations and media channels; duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director; program implementation; sound management/fiscal practices; change management; technology developments; MSOffice software; basic database functions; English grammar and composition; office and administrative best practices and procedures; general clerical duties.
Skill in: Organization; public relations; advanced communication strategies; public speaking; writing; project management; word processing; data entry; operating computer hardware and software systems.
Ability to: Communicate information effectively; prepare and present speeches and press releases; interpret and explain agency programs; implement new programs; work concurrently on multiple tasks/projects; resolve recurring and standard problems; maintain accurate records; construct standard tables and graphs for meetings and presentations; gather, collate and summarize data; act as a liaison between the Executive Director and interested parties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor's degree in communications, social science, English, education, or closely related field
· Progressively responsible administrative experience supporting senior level leadership in social services, education, or industry
· Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
· Considerable knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.)
· Ability to interact with a wide range of people in executive situations
· Experience working with an emphasis on careful attention to details in a demanding and fast paced administrative office that requires strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently

· Experience planning large and small events
· Successful grant writing
· Practical experience in social services, education, and/or human resources
· Knowledge of JFS policies and procedures, particularly with respect to public assistance
