Match 2024

OU, Oh Yeah!
HCOM Achieves 99% Match Rate

Preliminary numbers showed that 99% of the Ohio University Heritage College Class of 2024 successfully matched!

Of those, 69% matched in Ohio, and 47% matched in a primary care specialty. One-third of the students matched in primary care in Ohio.

OOA President Nick Hess, DO, posted a message on OOA social media accounts on behalf of the membership to recognize the match participants:

I would like to congratulate all of the students after the most recent residency match. Your hard work has paid off, and you all should be tremendously proud of your accomplishment. This is a huge step along your osteopathic journey.

For those that will be training in Ohio, please remember that the OOA will continue to serve you through your postgraduate training. Again, congratulations students!

Graduating students can use this form to update the OOA on their training institution and specialty.

Medical students from around the country learned where they would be matched last Friday, although a handful of students followed a different timeline, including students who matched through the military, and urology and ophthalmology specialties as well as students participating in the HCOM Transformative Care Continuum (TCC). The TCC program is an accelerated curriculum developed in partnership with Cleveland Clinic. Students are admitted directly into family medicine residency programs at Cleveland Clinic Akron General or Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center upon graduation.

Nationwide, fourth-year osteopathic medical students achieved a 92.3% match rate. A record high number of 7,705 osteopathic medical students and past DO graduates matched into year 1 (PGY-1) residency positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This number reflects the 92.3% match rate for the 8,033 DO seniors who participated, a 0.7% increase from last year.

Participating fourth-year osteopathic medical students matched into 25 specialties and 16 combined specialties. In total, the 2024 NRMP match included 6,395 certified programs offering 41,503 PGY-1 and PGY-2 training positions, the largest number in the NRMP’s 72-year history. Offerings included 125 more programs and 1,128 more positions than the 2023 main residency match.

According to a whitepaper published by the NRMP last October, DO seniors had the highest placement rate of all applicant types in 2023.

This was the fifth match to take place since the transition to the single graduate medical education accreditation system was fully implemented.

Final placement numbers, which include students who participated in the NRMP Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program and those who place after Match Week, will be available in the coming weeks.

The following national breakdown shows the top 15 specialties matched into by fourth-year osteopathic medical students seeking PGY-1 placements:

OMT

Still Technique Course with Dr. Van Buskirk

The OMM Department at OU-HCOM is holding a Still Technique Course, May 17-19, featuring Richard L. Van Buskirk, DO, who is internationally recognized for his unparalleled expertise in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine. With a career spanning 35 years, Dr. Van Buskirk has made substantial contributions to the advancement of this specialized medical field.

Still technique is an osteopathic manipulative medicine technique derived from the Indirect then Direct manipulative techniques first developed and utilized by Andrew Taylor Still in the late 19th century. After a 90-year hiatus in which the methodology was rarely used (and when used was not recognized as that of Dr. Still), it was rediscovered and redeveloped by Dr. Van Buskirk and others.

The course is focused on teaching this methodology to physicians and OMS who are interested in learning and using a manipulative method that is relatively rapid, generally painless, and quite effective. It requires a good working knowledge of functional musculoskeletal anatomy, which is also taught in the course. For those who already have a reasonable working knowledge of the methodology it should add to their technique base. After taking this course all should be able to use at least some of the techniques in their daily practice and will have developed a base on which they can grow their proficiency.

The course will run simultaneously from the HCOM Dublin and Cleveland campuses. Dr. Van Buskirk will present live with Cheryl Hammes, DO, at the Dublin campus. Katrina Rakowsky, DO, is the on-site facilitator in Cleveland.

Complete details and registration are here.
