Insurance Department Issues PLI Claims Report

 

A total of 3,094 Ohio medical professional liability claims were closed in 2011, according to data collected by the Ohio Department of Insurance and released, March 1, in it's seventh annual closed claim report.  Among findings:

• Malpractice claims have steadily decreased from approximately 5,000 in 2005 to 3,000 in each of the last four years;
• A total of 3,094 claims were closed by 101 insuring entities in 2011;  
• Seventy six percent, or 2,343 of the claims, were closed without payment to a claimant ,while 24 percent, or 751, were closed with an indemnity payment;
• Although most medical malpractice claims were closed without payments, almost all generated expenses for investigation and defense; these expenses totaled $84,010,910, or an average of $33,591 per closed claim.

Ohio law requires all entities that provide medical professional liability insurance in Ohio  to report closed claims data annually. Entities mandated to report include  authorized insurers, surplus lines insurers, risk retention groups and self-insurers.

Claims are reported to the Department and included in analysis based on the year in which they reach final outcome.  The specific data filed by each reporting entity is confidential and is not subject to public record requests.
