OPPA members encouraged to sign-on to help pass Senate Bill 162

As a partner in the Ohio Alliance for Mental Illness Exemption (OAMIE), the OPPA has been working for more than a year now to pass legislation to prohibit the execution of defendants with specific mental illnesses at the time of their crimes.

There have now been four hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee and a vote is expected soon, first to pass the committee, and then on the floor of the Senate.

The OPPA and eight other Ohio mental health organizations taking a lead on this legislation wrote a joint letter to the legislature earlier this month. Now the broader OAMIE coalition is calling on everyone concerned with this issue to write to their legislators in support of Senate Bill 162.

Additionally, there is a special sign-on letter for credentialed mental health professionals, and another sign-on letter for law professors who teach in related areas. Please visit the action page to write your legislators and add your name to professional sign-on letters if appropriate
