Obama Administration Announces Additional Actions to Address the Prescription Opioid Abuse and Heroin Epidemic

At the National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit last week, President Obama announced the following Administration actions: expanding access to treatment, establishing a Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity Task Force, implementing parity in Medicaid, a funding opportunity for states purchasing and distributing naloxone, expanding public health-public safety partnerships to combat the spread of heroin, and more. Read more >

Additional Actions from Obama Administration to Combat Opioid Epidemic Include Key Parity Initiatives

Among the Obama Administration actions announced last week to address opioid addiction, several focus on parity implementation. A Presidential Memorandum created an interagency taskforce to ensure health plans’ coverage of mental health and addiction benefits is comparable to coverage of medical and surgical benefits. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also released a final rule on the compliance and application of requirements in the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) to coverage offered by Medicaid managed care organizations, Medicaid Alternative Benefit Plans and Children’s Health Insurance Programs.
