NPR (8/5, Tribble) reports in its “Shots” blog on the results from the first nine months of Cleveland’s early Medicaid expansion experiment.
MetroHealth, a public hospital based in Cleveland that “struggled to cover the costs of [uninsured] patients,” decided to redirect “$30 million from Cuyahoga County taxpayers to create its very own Medicaid program for residents.”
In the first nine months, “emergency department visits dropped 60 percent and primary care visits went up 50 percent.” MetroHealth also “sav[ed] an average of $150 on each patient every month.” This story was covered in conjunction with Kaiser Health News (8/5, Tribble).
