Beryl Batters Texas, Two Dead

Now a tropical storm, it slams the Houston area

Beryl was downgraded to a tropical storm Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center said, and continues to pound Houston and the surrounding area with intense winds and rain.

More than 2.6 million people are without power in Texas, according to poweroutage.us. At least two people have been killed in the storm, officials said.

Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane about 4 a.m. Central time Monday near Matagorda, Texas.
