Governor Mike DeWine requested that President Joe Biden declare a major disaster five months after a toxic train derailment in East Palestine sent plumes of hazardous materials into the air and impacted thousands of residents.
In a letter written to the president, DeWine says "no unmet needs have been reported to the state," but that is only because of Norfolk Southern's voluntary actions.
DeWine said a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration would ensure that the state and federal government use any available resources if the train company would stop any volunteer efforts at some point in the future.
