AEP Ohio is blaming this week's severe cold for an outage Tuesday night that put around 16,000 customers in the dark.
AEP sent an email to customers Wednesday afternoon which said "the outage was caused when a breaker that provides electricity to your neighborhood became overloaded. When this happened, the circuits connected to the breaker went out to protect the grid and prevent damage that could result in a larger, extended outage."
Just like the breaker panel in a home, the power grid is designed to shut off overloaded portions to protect the rest. Matt Bennett, AEP Ohio Director of Operations, said the power grid operated exactly how it was supposed to.
