An Update on Tax Reform from the Community Impact Coalition Meeting
The coalition held its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. on May 12
We have reason to be concerned about what is coming out of the House Ways & Means Committee today.
While Ways & Means released a "skinny" version of the tax markup on Friday evening, which can be viewed here, this is not what will impact nonprofit organizations like ours. It's what's coming in the full markup expected at 2 p.m. ET today about which we must be concerned. Hill staffers have indicated to members of the coalition that nonprofits will likely be impacted by what's in the expanded markup, which will include paid-fors.
Given this, we must continue to be vigilant and continue to encourage our members and other nonprofit professionals to share their voice on the value of nonprofits provide to the communities they serve. This can easily be done by completing this form: https://asaecenter.quorum.us/campaign/122933/.
Additionally, the lobbying firm and communications company working on behalf of the CIC shared the valuable one-pager attached to this email. It reflects the exceptionally positive light in which voters, particularly conservative voters, view nonprofits and believe that our tax-exempt status should be left unchanged. You are encouraged to share this document far and wide.
Later today and also later this week, additional sign-on letters will be distributed to CIC members.
Some other points shared during the call:
- Polling finds 73 percent of polled parties [by CRAFT (the communications firm assisting the CIC)] indicate they oppose changing the tax-exempt status of nonprofits.

Lawmakers seem more inclined to listen when being reminded that nonprofits reduce burdens on federal, state and local government. Conservative voters in the poll indicated if tax-exempt status of nonprofits goes away, the burden on state and local government will likely increase.

Conservations in the Senate remain positive about protecting the nonprofits' tax-exempt status.
