CMS Announces MIPS Deadline Changes and Advanced Payments for Change Healthcare Issues
Earlier this week, CMS made two announcements regarding proactive activities to address the challenges physicians and other healthcare providers are experiencing as a result of the Change Healthcare cyberattack. One addresses opportunities for practices to receive advanced payment, and the other extends the deadline for MIPS 2023 data submission to April 15.

On March 9, 2024, CMS made available Change Healthcare/Optum Payment Disruption (CHOPD) accelerated payments to Part A providers and advance payments to Part B suppliers experiencing claims disruptions as a result of the Incident. The CHOPD accelerated and advance payments may be granted in amounts representative of up to thirty days (30) of claims payments to eligible providers and suppliers. The average 30-day payment is based on the total claims paid to the provider/supplier between August 1, 2023 and October 31, 2023, divided by three. These payments will be repaid through automatic recoupment from Medicare claims for a period of 90 days. A demand will be issued for any remaining balance on day 91 following the issuance of the accelerated or advance payment.
Announcement on MIPS Deadline Extension:
CMS has extended the data submission period for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) eligible clinicians who participated in the 2023 performance year of the Quality Payment Program (QPP).
Data can now be submitted and updated until 8 p.m. ET on April 15, 2024.
Follow the steps outlined below to submit data:
- Go to the Quality Payment Program sign in page.
- Sign in using your QPP access credentials.
- Submit your MIPS data for the 2023 performance year or review the data reported on your behalf by a third party. (You can’t correct errors with your data after the submission period, so it’s important to make sure the data submitted on your behalf is accurate.)
