Update on SB 129 – Optometric Surgery Legislation

The Ohio legislature recessed for the summer at the end of June. There was no additional activity on SB 129 after the OOS and OSMA testified in opposition to the bill in front of the Senate Health Committee on June 12. We sent out a member alert after opposition testimony. If you missed it we have provided links to the written testimony and recording of the actual testimony below.

We don’t anticipate the legislature returning for much activity until after the election in November. When the legislature does return we anticipate there could be activity on the bill and therefore need all OOS members to continue advocacy efforts this summer and fall.

How You Can Help:

  1. Give to the Ohio Medical Eye PAC by texting OMEPAC to 41444.

  2. Host a local legislator at your office to talk to them about eye surgery and why its important only ophthalmologists do these procedures. Contact the OOS office at advocacy@ohioeye.org to schedule a time.

  3. Be watching for alerts from the OOS and AAO to contact your legislature when the bill is considered again later this year.
