Preview of Medical Board Happenings

The State Medical Board of Ohio is planning for another busy year. As you may know, the Board is comprised of twelve (12) members, eight (8) of which are physicians and four (4) public members. You can find a list of each current member, along with the current Board President Dr. Yeshwant Ready, here >

The Board typically meets monthly, and OSMA is the only medical professional organization that directly covers every meeting.

The Board held its first meeting of 2025 on Wednesday, January 8, in which it discussed the end of the prior legislative session, and the beginning of the new one. In its first meeting, the Board expressed some potential policy issues it may look at in 2025, including medical spas. The Board has been meeting with other state agencies (i.e. Department of Health, Board of Nursing, Board of Pharmacy, etc.) to generally discuss the intersection that these businesses have on various regulated medical professionals. The Board has not indicated that there is a specific policy proposal expected to emerge from these discussions, but staff will continue to monitor for any potential OSMA action.  Additionally, the Board strives to increase public awareness, for example through initiatives like its new podcast.

The Board also indicated that the petition cycle for adding to the list of conditions approved for Medical Marijuana has begun for 2025. Any submitted applications will be reviewed by the Board starting this winter.

OSMA provides updates not only for issues affecting members from the Medical Board, but all state and federal regulatory agencies. Please do not hesitate to email Sean McCullough with any questions, and please make sure to review OSMA advocacy updates for additional news.
