For Austin McKay, termite research is personal.
Having grown up in the greater New Orleans area, he saw firsthand the damage Formosan subterranean termites caused to homes, businesses, and communities. Those experiences inspired him to pursue a Ph.D. in Entomology at Louisiana State University, where he is studying how environmental conditions—particularly flooding—affect termite survival, behavior, and spread.
Austin's research explores why termite populations often thrive after major flooding events and how changing environmental conditions influence their ability to survive and expand into new areas. By gaining a better understanding of these processes, he hopes to help the pest management industry improve treatment strategies and identify new approaches for controlling termites.
Beyond his research, Austin is passionate about serving others. As an Eagle Scout, former special education teacher, coach, and youth mentor, he has always been committed to giving back to his community. His long-term goal is to continue supporting the pest management industry through research, Extension, and educating the next generation of scientists.
