The Season That Defines Us: Embracing Spring's Opportunity

There is something about spring that feels different in our profession. While the world talks about fresh starts and new beginnings, those of us in our industry know this season carries a weight — and an opportunity — that goes far deeper than the calendar.

Our grounds come back to life. Families return more frequently. Communities reconnect with the spaces we have worked hard to maintain and honor. And with all of that comes one of the most demanding stretches of our professional year. Mother's Day, in particular, stands as a singular moment — a time when grief is close to the surface for so many families, and when the quality of our service and the condition of our facilities speak louder than any words we could offer.

How we perform during this period matters enormously — not just in the moment, but in what it sets in motion. Families who feel genuinely cared for during emotionally difficult visits are the same families who are open to conversations about the future — about pre-planning and the gift of certainty it offers their loved ones. Spring is not just one of our busiest seasons. Handled well, it can be the catalyst that fuels our preneed momentum for the rest of the year.

This is why the SCCFA's mission feels especially relevant right now. Our association exists to support the professionals who do this work every day — to provide the resources, the standards, and the community that help all of us rise to exactly these kinds of moments. When one of our member locations excels, it reflects on all of us. When we invest in our people, our facilities, and our service culture, we are not just serving our businesses — we are advancing the reputation of our profession across the region.

With that in mind, I'd encourage every member to treat this spring as an opportunity for intentional renewal. Take a fresh look at your properties, your processes, and your team's readiness. Small improvements — a well-kept entrance, a more thoughtful arrangement conversation, a renewed commitment to follow-up — can leave a lasting impression on a family in a way that carries your reputation forward long after the season ends.

I am also looking forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming convention in San Antonio. These gatherings are at the heart of what makes the SCCFA such a valuable association. The education, the conversations between sessions, the relationships built and renewed over the course of a few days — these are the things that make us better individually and stronger collectively.

Thank you for the care and professionalism you bring to this work. It is not always easy, and it is rarely celebrated in the way it deserves to be. But what you do matters deeply — to the families you serve, to the communities you are part of, and to the future of this profession. I am proud to represent an association of people who take that responsibility as seriously as you do.

Warm regards,
Jeremy R. Weaver
