Isometrics and Isotonics (5)
April 15-16, 2023
Isometric and Isotonics
Erin Long
Ontario, OR
Isometric and isotonic techniques offer the opportunity to work with inefficient muscular tension patterns, tone muscle tissue that has become flaccid, and smooth out any bumps or jittery grabs within the muscle spindles.
By restraining movement or toning through movement while a muscle is engaged, we stimulate the nervous system and reciprocal inhibition, cue the self-correcting reflexes into action, and greater balance between opposing muscles or muscle groups is encouraged.
The process is remarkably quick, 8-10 seconds, and offers us a powerful tool to open stuck or contracted areas that do not respond to other techniques.
The client is an active participant in this process, bringing self-awareness and recognition of the work.
In this class isometric and isotonic exercises will be taught and practiced offering relief from chronic pain, rigid muscle patterns, postural imbalances, and more.

Self Care for Resilience and Ease
Jessica Mark
Lincoln, NE
As bodyworkers, our self care can easily drop to the bottom of the priority list. We can often feel burn out, overwhelm, and/or resentment creep in when we least expect it. Our capacity for sustainability in our lives and within our career can be enhanced by understanding our relationship to our autonomic nervous system.
Practices to help bring awareness and understanding to your unique nervous system to work toward increased vitality and ease will be the focus of this class. Through the principles of Ortho-Bionomy, we will learn how to recognize and engage the resources within our own bodies using safe, comfortable positioning and gentle movement exercises.
This class is excellent for anyone wishing to relieve pain, gain adaptability, and increase ease of movement in the body.
Objective of this course include:
Learning options for restorative practices and breath awareness exercises to tone and support the parasympathetic nervous system.
Exploring Ortho-Bionomy self care techniques to listen for the body’s natural self-corrective response.
Understanding the anatomy of stress in relation to our enteric nervous system, vagus nerve, and adaptability of our autonomic nervous system. Identifying how stress inhabits in the body, ways stress can metabolize, and how ease is sensed physiologically.
Exploring techniques to provide options for movement and choice through the fluid system, support structural integrity and boundaries through the skeletal system, and cultivate space through awareness of energetic relationships.
Understanding the physiology of how the systems of our body work together to store and release energy.

Arthur Lincoln Pauls developed a very effective way of correcting structural imbalances in the cranium.
Learn to feel your clients and your own cranium in a 3-D way.
Using different cranial holds and the spirals in the three dimensions, learn to help the cranium self-correct so structural movement and balance can be reintroduced.
When working with the cranium it is essential to integrate the changes with the rest of the body, especially the pelvis, the heart and the extremities.

Visceral: Working with the Vagus and Phrenic Nerves
Mike Miller
New York, NY
In this class we will explore the pathways of the Vagus and Phrenic nerves and learn how to work with them.
The Vagus nerve is a cranial nerve and the longest sympathetic nerve in the body. The Vagus has both sensory and motor functions and plays a crucial role in the heart, lungs and digestive systems.
The Phrenic nerve begins in the mid neck and connects to the diaphragm controlling our respiration.
,br> We will be using Ortho-Bionomy to work with the soft tissues and bony structures along the pathway these nerves follow.
Working with these areas will relieve tension helping these nerves.
We will be working with the neck, shoulders, esophagus, chest, diaphragm, and abdomen.

Visceral: Below the Dome
Mike Miller
Butler, PA
This class presents an Ortho-Bionomy approach to restoring the functional movements of the abdomen and the organs of digestion.
We will look at the viscera as a community within itself and explore how its movements extend out into the surrounding areas.
In this 3 day class, we will explore the mouth, throat, esophagus, sphincters, liver, gallbladder, stomach, intestines and more.
We will learn to palpate and sense the organ themselves and how they relate to each other. We will also work with the bony structures and soft tissues that support them.
Did you know the liver can cause right shoulder, neck and breathing issues?
Did you know the mesentery root can cause issues with the right sacroiliac joint and prolapse of the uterus and bladder?
Did you know the large intestine can cause hip & low back pain, and sciatica?
These are just a few examples of how the viscera can affect the structure of the body. The viscera can also affect each other causing poor digestion, nutrient absorption and removal of toxic substances and wastes.
Come join us and learn how the viscera play a vital role in our health and well being.

Ortho-Bionomy® - Above the Dome- Thoracic visceral In this class we will explore the bony structures, organs, and the soft tissue; that help hold the structure together or pull on each other causing misalignments and dysfunctions.
We will be using an Ortho-Bionomy® approach to help bring balance to the Thoracic cavity and throat (Ribs, Intercostal muscles, Diaphragm, Trachea and Bronchi) organs (Lungs, Pleura, Heart, Thyroid) and bring them into relationship with their surroundings.
Ortho-Bionomy® - Below the Dome- Abdominal Visceral This class presents an Ortho-Bionomy® approach to restoring the functional movements of the abdomen and the organs of digestion.
We will look at the viscera as a community within itself and explore how its movements extend out into the surrounding areas. In this class, we will explore the sphincters, liver, gallbladder, stomach, intestines and more. We will learn to palpate and sense the organ themselves and how they relate to each other. We will also work with the bony structures and soft tissues that support them.
When I first took this visceral class in 2007. I remember my instructor Darlene Smith saying, “If the body is not changing, we need to look at the viscera.” I spent six years assisting her as we discovered the potential of the body to heal and how the viscera played an important role.

We will work with the individual organs and look at their relationship to each other. We will also look at the surrounding soft tissues and the supporting structures.
We will work with the kidneys, ureters, bladder, uterus, prostate, ovaries, spine, pelvis, and the pelvic floor. “When we work with the pelvis. We are addressing the very core of our stability. Pelvic stability has a major impact on how we meet the earth and walk in the world on a daily basis as well as enhancing total body health”. Darlene Smith

Equine Healing Through Movement: Posture, Gait and Recovery (Online)
Susan Smith
ONLINE via Zoom
The horse lives by rhythms – when and how it moves, eating, drinking, sleeping, sheltering, etc. People also live by rhythms, but sometimes both equines and humans become disconnected from some of them by the demands of daily life.
We can support these rhythms with Ortho-Bionomy bodywork. In Ortho-Bionomy we offer for people posture and what are called “Post-techniques,” techniques designed to support the hands-on bodywork techniques employed.
When we interact with the horse, our posture tells the horse a lot about what we want to do, how we feel about them, where we are going. At best we should be a guiding presence, and a body they can mirror.
Everything in our posture and gait has to do with our own energy. The same is true of the horse. In this class we will become familiar with ourselves in a new way:
Learn how to recognize our own walking, stopping and turning and how to influence a horse with our “conscious walking.”
Learn how to observe gait, movement, rhythm and standing posture in the horse.
Learn powerful techniques including isometrics to support and reinforce good posture and rehabilitation – in ourselves and horses.
Work with mirror neurons.
We will become familiar with horses’ movement in a new way:
Learn how to recognize lameness and what posture signifies.
Common presentations of different horses including range of motion.
What horses’ posturing tells us.
Common problems of riding and non-riding horses and ways to address them.
Learn how to walk with a horse to improve our own and the horse’s gait.
Learn to work away from the “problem” for utmost success.
How to observe and work with:
Neck posture Pelvic posture
Mid-spine posture
Leg positioning Leg weight Injuries

Introduction to the Equine Spine
Susan Smith
Santa Fe, NM
What’s the big deal about the horse’s spine? You might say. While people are fond of saying ‘no hoof no horse’ you could say ‘no spine no horse.’ The spine is the central structure of the body that makes possible all movement, flexion and extension, and sustains health in all other areas.
To work with the spine is to work on the entire being, holistically. The spine contains the nervous continuation of the brain, the spinal cord. Each of the different types of vertebrae have their function, but ideally work in concert with one another.
By working with the spine we can release non-productive patterns in the equine body. This lively workshop aims to foster a holistic view of the equine through application of non-force techniques and principles devoted to the spine.
