Call for Nominations for the Southern Ohio Synod Council and Voting Members to the 2022 CWA
The Nominating Committee for the Southern Ohio Synod Assembly invites members of congregations in the Southern Ohio Synod to prayerfully consider if God is calling you to use your experience and gifts to serve the synod and/or the ELCA as a whole. You may nominate yourself for any of the open positions described below no later than March 22, 2021.
If you know someone who would be an excellent addition to the Synod Council or the Churchwide Assembly delegation, please share this announcement with them and encourage them to submit the nomination form by the deadline.
Descriptions of the duties and openings for the Synod Council and the 2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly are provided below.
Please note that nomination forms for all positions must be submitted to the Nomination Committee no later than March 22, 2021.
Southern Ohio Synod Council
The following positions are open for nominations. The positions with incumbents who have agreed to be considered for nomination are marked with an asterisk *. Please note that all positions are 4-year terms.

Below is the job description for members of the Southern Ohio Synod Council:
†S10.01. The Synod Council consisting of the four officers of the synod, 10 to 24 other members, and at least one youth shall be elected by the Synod Assembly.
for election and the term of office when not otherwise provided shall be specified in the bylaws. A member of the Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, unless otherwise elected as a voting member of the Synod Council, may serve as an advisory member of the Synod Council with voice but not vote.
†S10.01.1 If a member of the Synod Council is absent without good cause from two consecutive regular meetings of the Council, the position shall be declared vacant and such vacancy shall be filled by the Synod Council until the next regular meeting of the Synod Assembly.
†S10.02. The Synod Council shall be the board of directors of this synod and shall serve as its interim legislative authority between meetings of the Synod Assembly. It may make decisions which are not in conflict with actions taken by the Synod Assembly or which are not precluded by provisions of this constitution or the constitution and bylaws of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
S10.03. The functions of the Synod Council shall be to:
S10.03.01. The Synod Council shall ratify representatives, as requested, to the Boards of Directors of Capital University and Wittenberg University.
S10.03.02. The Synod Council shall appoint representatives of the synod to the Boards of Directors of Oesterlen-Services for Youth, Inc., Ohio Council of Churches, Ohio Lutheran Campus Ministry, Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio, Midwest Ministry Development Center, Metropolitan Area Church Board, Columbus, Metropolitan Churches United, Dayton, and the Wernle Children’s Home, Inc.
S10.05. No elected member of the Synod Council shall receive compensation for such service.
The members of the Synod Council meet at least four times a year to do the business of the synod as describe above. From time to time, a special meeting may be called to handle business that cannot wait until the next scheduled council meeting. The Synod Council is currently meeting virtually, but usually meets in person in Central Ohio on Saturdays.

The ELCA Churchwide Assembly is the primary decision-making body of the church. Voting members are chosen locally from across the ELCA. Together with other leaders of the ELCA, and guided by the Holy Spirit, these voting members discuss the work of the Church in the world and make decisions reflecting a common vision for the ELCA and its member congregations and synods. The 2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly is scheduled for August 8-12 in Columbus, Ohio. Hotel, food and travel expenses are mostly covered for voting members. Nominees must be available to attend all five days of the Churchwide Assembly and must be able to travel to Columbus.

Deadline for submitting nominations is March 22, 2021. Any nominations received after that date will not be considered by the Nomination Committee.
