Speaker: Todd Murray (WSU)
This session focuses on the invasive species affecting Washington’s ecosystems and the pest management industry. Led by Todd Murray from WSU, the discussion delves into identifying major invasive pests, such as the brown marmorated stink bug and emerald ash borer, and understanding their environmental and economic impacts. Attendees will explore effective monitoring, control methods, and preventative strategies, as well as compliance with regulatory requirements for managing invasive species. Through real-world examples and case studies, this session aims to equip professionals with the knowledge to protect both natural and urban environments from the threats posed by invasive pests.
Speaker: Tina Zimmerman (WSDA)
This session will provide an overview of the updated certification and training (C&T) requirements that will impact all pesticide licensees in Washington State. To comply with the updated federal C&T rule, WSDA will be updating all rules and requirements surrounding pesticide licensing, including category changes, training requirements, updates to direct supervision of non-certified applicators, and dealer recordkeeping. These changes will require a specialty credit for all licensees and even additional testing for some. This session is important in understanding how these changes affect your pesticide license.
Speaker: Todd Murray (WSU)
Todd Murray returns to address the control and management of occasional invaders—pests that enter structures seasonally or sporadically. This session explores identification, behavior, and prevention strategies for pests such as stink bugs, cluster flies, and Asian lady beetles. Attendees will learn about monitoring techniques, IPM-based exclusion methods, and when chemical treatments may be necessary. Special emphasis will be placed on educating clients about the nature of occasional invaders, setting realistic expectations, and providing solutions that minimize disruption. This session equips pest professionals to address client concerns effectively while applying environmentally responsible practices.
Speaker: Billy Olesen, PestStop
This session, presented by Billy Olesen of PestStop, highlights environmentally friendly pest control practices through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques. Participants will gain insight into IPM principles such as monitoring, prevention, and biological control, with chemical solutions used only as a last resort. The session discusses the environmental, economic, and health benefits of IPM, including reduced pesticide use, protection of beneficial species, and cost-effective pest control. Attendees will leave with strategies to integrate IPM practices into their businesses, stay compliant with evolving environmental regulations, and communicate these sustainable approaches effectively to clients.
Speaker: Dowen Jocson (WSU)
Dowen Jocson from WSU leads this session, offering a thorough exploration of pesticide label comprehension, recent regulatory changes, and PPE requirements. Attendees will review essential label components such as safety instructions, application rates, and proper handling procedures, focusing on label interpretation skills to ensure safety and compliance. The session will also cover recent regulatory updates affecting pest control practices in Washington and highlight best practices for selecting and using PPE to protect both applicators and non-target organisms. This comprehensive session prepares pest professionals to work confidently and responsibly with pesticides in varied environments.
Speaker: Becky Maquire (WSDA) / Erik Hodson (WSDA)
Presented by Becky Macquire from WSDA, this session is designed to prepare pest management professionals for WSDA field inspections. Attendees will learn what to expect during an inspection, including required documentation, site readiness, and key compliance areas inspectors typically assess. Becky will cover strategies for effective communication with inspectors, responding to questions professionally, and handling inspection findings. The session also highlights common non-compliance issues and proactive steps to prevent them. By the end, participants will be well-prepared to navigate inspections confidently and use inspection feedback to improve their business practices.
