Ohio General Assembly Announces Leadership Team

This week the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate announced their leadership teams for the 132nd Ohio General Assembly, which convenes in January 2017.

Ohio Senate
Senator Larry ObhofA new Senate President, Senator Larry Obhof of Medina, was elected by Senate Republicans. Appointed to the Senate in 2011, Obhof was elected to a full term in 2012. He was re-elected this year. His district includes all of Medina, Ashland and Richland counties as well as portions of Holmes County. He replaces Senate President Keith Faber.

The following will serve on his leadership team:

  • Sen. Randy Gardner of Bowling Green was elected majority floor leader.
  • Sen. Gayle Manning of North Ridgeville was re-elected as majority whip.
  • Sen. Bob Peterson of Washington Courthouse was elected as president pro tempore.

The Senate Democrats have re-elected state Senator Joe Schiavoni of Boardman as minority leader. The following will serve on the Senate Democratic team:

  • Sen. Charleta Tavares of Columbus was re-elected as assistant minority leader.
  • Sen. Edna Brown of Toledo was re-elected as minority whip.
  • Sen. Cecil Thomas of Cincinnati was elected assistant minority whip.

Ohio House of Representatives
Representative Cliff RosenbergerSpeaker Cliff Rosenberger of Clarksville will continue as Speaker in the Republican controlled Ohio House with the following on his leadership team:

  • Rep. Kirk Schuring of Canton will serve as speaker pro tem.
  • Rep. Dorothy Pelanda of Marysville will serve as majority floor leader.
  • Rep. Sarah LaTourette of Bainbridge Twp. will serve as assistant majority floor leader.
  • Sen. Tom Patton of Strongsville will serve as majority whip
  • Rep. Rob McColley of Napoleon will serve as assistant majority whip.

The Ohio House Democrats have re-elected Representative Fred Strahorn of Dayton as minority leader. The following will serve on the House Democratic leadership team:

  • Rep. Nicholas Celebrezze of Parma will serve as assistant minority leader.
  • Rep. Nickie Antonio of Lakewood will serve as minority whip.
  • Rep. Emilia Sykes of Akron will serve as assistant minority whip.

On a congressional note, Congressman Steve Stivers becomes the first Ohio Republican since John Boehner to win a congressional leadership post when he was picked this week to head the National Republican Congressional Committee, the House GOP's campaign arm. Congressman Stivers will oversee recruiting GOP candidates, helping to run their campaigns and raising enough money to get them elected.
