2016 Call for Papers

ECA 2016 Convention - Performance Studies IG - Call for Submissions

Performance Studies Interest Group

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2015 (midnight deadline)

The Performance Studies Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers, performances, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtables, symposia, debates, open forums, workshops, and community programs) for the 107th annual convention of the Eastern Communication Association.

Our theme for 2016 is “(R)evolution.” Revolution and Evolution. Revolution brings to mind revolt, overthrowing old and outdated systems (often incorporating violence and struggle), an orbit around a central body, the completion of a cycle. The conference theme offers our interest group a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the revolutionary cultural and sociopolitical changes explored in Performance Studies. Areas of inquiry might include #BlackLivesMatter movement (especially salient to our location in Baltimore, MA), and Occupy Wall Street, Theatre of the Oppressed. Evolution.

We wish to highlight papers and performances which offer ideas for future revolutions in Performance Studies, as well as historical reflections on how Performance Studies has evolved. Evolution encapsulates growth, development, progressive change over generations, and survival. Some areas to explore might be: evolutions in performance pedagogy and performance-based research, the increased roles of digital technologies and collaboration in Performance Studies, and Performance Studies intersections with 21st century activism. We invite you to explore the roles of performance in advocating for social justice and sparking revolutions in thought and action. We hope that you will join us in shaping how the Performance Studies Interest Group will evolve in the future, and in exploring revolutions in performance, praxis, and pedagogy.

In keeping with the 2016 convention theme, we ask you to consider papers, performances, thematic panels, workshops, and other programs that explore the questions and issues related to revolution and evolution in Performance Studies. We especially encourage co-sponsored submissions between Performance Studies Interest Groups and other Interest Groups that promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
