ECA 2015 - GIFTS - Call for Submissions - Plus Info on Top Papers

Great Ideas for Teaching Students, G.I.F.T.S. 

The 106th Convention of the Eastern Communication Association is now taking submissions for the G.I.F.T.S. program. The theme of this year’s convention is “Deliberation” and will take place in Philadelphia on April 22-26, 2015. 

You are encouraged to submit an activity, assignment, project, game, or simulation that you have used in the classroom successfully.  The activity should address specific communication theory(s), concept(s), skill(s) or learning objective(s) appropriate to the communication discipline at the college classroom level.

NEW: Two G.I.F.T.S submissions will receive the “Top Paper” award, for contributing the most unique, innovative, and substantial work!!!!

Guidelines for Submission: 

  1. Choose a “Great Idea” that you have successfully used in the classroom.
  2. Create a well-written, mistake-free proposal that includes the following:
    • The tile of your activity
    • The course(s) for which it is intended
    • The goals and objectives of the activity
    • A rationale for conducting this particular activity
    • Directions for the activity, including
      1. any preparation/preliminary steps &/or materials needed
      2. an explanation of the connection to concepts, theory, and/or skills covered in the activity
    • Typical results
    • How to debrief the activity
  3. The proposal should be no more than 1-2 pages long. A bibliography may be included, if relevant.
  4. Submissions must include a detachable/separate cover page with the submitter’s full contact information and institutional affiliation.
  5. Send your complete submission to Jenny Warren at jwarren@collin.edu as an attached Word attachment(s) by October 15, 2014Please put your name and “ECA G.I.F.T.S. submission” in the subject line.

Submissions must follow these guidelines or they will not be considered. 

NOTE: In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2015 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Philadelphia. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Planner and ECA VP; no shows will be removed from the official program.

If your submission is accepted for presentation, you will:

  1. Arrive at your conference session with 30 copies of a short, comprehensive handout that explains the learning objectives and process of the teaching idea.  One page is best. Audio Visual Equipment will not be utilized.
  2. In a traditional panel style, each presenter will take approximately 10 minutes to explain their activity to the audience. At the conclusion of the presentations, the audience will ask questions and make comments.

1. Faculty, please consider sponsoring student submissions to the Undergraduate Scholars’ Conference &/or the Graduate Poster Sessions. Please look for a separate call for participants.
