AHIA Membership Criteria

Membership in AHIA is limited to attorneys who have extensive experience providing the highest quality legal services to clients in the Hospitality Industry, including service as in-house counsel.  The Board shall make membership decisions in its sole discretion, which discretion shall not be applied arbitrarily or for any discriminatory or improper purpose.

For attorneys serving as in-house counsel for Hospitality Industry concerns, minimum qualifications include:

  • Membership in good standing with at least one state bar association or international equivalent, or voluntary inactive bar status under circumstances that do not bring into question the attorney’s character or fitness to practice law; and
  • At least 5 years practice of law and serving as in-house counsel within the Hospitality Industry.

For attorneys not serving as in-house counsel, minimum qualifications include:

  • Membership in good standing with at least one state bar association or international equivalent; and
  • At least 10 years practice of law with at least 50% of practice devoted to service of Hospitality Industry clients for the most recent 5 years.

For attorneys educated and/or licensed outside of the United States, the Board shall determine membership eligibility, in its discretion, based upon minimum Hospitality Industry experience deemed to be equivalent to the above.

“Hospitality Industry” includes but is not limited to hotels, restaurants, casinos, cruise travel, lodging, public place of amusement, and those engaged in the MICE (meetings, incentive, conference and exhibitions) industry.
