IME Statement on Proposed Tariff Policies
Washington, DC – The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) president Clark Mica today released the following statement after sending a letter to the White House in response to the Trump Administration announcing its plan to levy tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China:
“Commercial explosives play a crucial role in strengthening America’s energy dominance and supporting the development of modern infrastructure that drives commerce. IME is ready to collaborate with President Trump to achieve these objectives.
“While we acknowledge the importance of addressing illicit drug flow across our Northern and Southern borders, we are seriously concerned about the newly announced tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.
“These tariffs will adversely affect the domestic commercial explosives industry by increasing production costs and disrupting supply chains. Additionally, these increased tariffs will drive up costs for key downstream industries, including but not limited to, energy, construction, and mining.
“We urge President Trump to reconsider the tariffs and specifically request that all commercial explosives products, along with the necessary inputs for domestic manufacturing, be exempt from these tariffs."
