Recognizing Professional Development, Publications, and Advocacy

While many people use the terms "crazy" or "unusual" to describe 2020, NCDA did not let a pandemic slow down its efforts to be a leading source of professional development, publications, and advocacy. A bit beyond the halfway point in the year, NCDA can proudly state its accomplishments in the forms of a webinar on burnout, a book on John Holland, a call to social justice and a celebration of members!

Congratulations to the NCDA 2020 Award Winners!

Watching previously presented NCDA webinars offers a convenient way to earn CEUs (at a low fee of $35 for 1 contact hour). Now, as part of NCDA's response to COVID-19, CEUs for watching a group of webinars are available at a discounted price. A new webinar is scheduled for August 25, 2020: "Preventing and Transforming Career Burnout into Opportunity in the New Era of COVID-19." Presented by Ronda Ansted and Sheri Mahaney, this webinar is described as follows:

Career burnout has been on the rise for decades and with the addition of the COVID-19 economic crisis, it is going to get worse. Times like this can help us reflect on what’s really important. This webinar will give career professionals new tools and approaches to prevent and overcome burnout for themselves and their clients, such as identifying and building on what brings you joy, envisioning the life you want for yourself, and taking concrete steps to turn that vision into reality.

Theory, Practice and Research

In 1959, John L. Holland introduced a theory of vocational choices involving personality typology (widely known in the career development field as the Holland Code, or RIASEC). In a new My Life with a Theory by John L Hollandpublication from NCDA, readers of "My Life with a Theory" will finally see Holland's previously unpublished autobiography and appreciate this antidote for imperfect secondary accounts of the highly researched theory. This long-awaited book provides counseling practitioners, counselor educators, researchers, vocational psychologists and students with:

  1. a clear and concise understanding of the Holland Theory and its implications for practice,
  2. a snapshot of John Holland’s life-long effort to establish the efficacy of the theory, and
  3. an appreciation for the life of an accomplished theoretician and researcher and his impact on the counseling profession.

Call for Social Justice

Social justice is a guiding value of NCDA and co-exists with career development practice. NCDA encourages all members to respond to the recent calls to action to learn and unlearn, to take action in allyship and advocacy movements and in anti-racism efforts. A new webpage was created in 2020 for social justice and will be updated often with resources, readings and research that supports these efforts.  Included on the webpage is NCDA's response to racially motivated violence and links to free webinars and articles that support a call to action.
