August President's Message

Two events in the past week have well demonstrated leadership in action. One of the three strategic pillars of Ohio ACEP is Leadership. Last week, I had the privilege of being invited to attend the Constantine C. Roussi Memorial Lecture in Emergency Medicine at Akron General EM Residency. Past Ohio Chapter and National ACEP President, Dr. Nick Jouriles invited past and current leaders from Ohio and emergency medicine. We heard from Dr. Bruce Janiak, the first EM resident in the universe. Drs. Brian Keaton and Mard DeBard, both past national officers in ACEP, spoke on their journey through ACEP and their careers. Dr. Carol Cunningham, Medical Director of the Ohio Division of EMS and detailed her roles in both state and federal EMS agencies.

As I write this message, I sit at the Ohio Emergency Medicine Residents’ Assembly, at which nearly all of Ohio’s EM residencies are represented. 200 residents, medical students, and leaders from Ohio ACEP, National ACEP, and EMRA are in attendance, a significant increase over last year's Assembly. I am amazed to see this many residents at the beginning of their careers engaged in the Chapter and their future. The residents have elected the new resident member of our Board of Directors, Nikhil Mohan, DO from Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

As I see this connection of our past leaders and current residents, I'm filled with confidence about the future leadership of our specialty.
