A Message from the BMV regarding Issuance of 90 Day Temp Tags and More…

Effective March 20, 2020, all temporary tags issued by dealerships will be good for 90 days from the date of issuance. For those customers who are currently driving on a valid 45-day temporary tag they may visit www.oplates.com and purchase a hardship temporary tag.

Please note: All hardship tags will be mailed to the address that was registered with the previous temporary tag.

For those dealerships who do not sell temporary tags, they may direct the customer to visit www.oplates.com and purchase a temporary tag. The temporary tag will be mailed to the address that is input by the customer at the time of purchase.

The online temporary tag services are being implemented after serious consideration of the best available information relative to the health and safety of our network of partners, dealership staff members, and the public at large in efforts to expand current statewide risk mitigation strategies for preventing the spread of the Corona virus – 19.

DEALERS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING COVID-19

As you know, the Governor announced that all public, in-person transactions are suspended at 181 Deputy Registrar License agencies effective end of day March 18, 2020.  At each agency’s discretion, however, they have been advised they can continue fleet and dealer transactions on a drop-off/pick-up basis only.  Dealer and fleet runners are not permitted to wait inside the agency during processing.  Work with your preferred deputy registrar to set procedures. 

Furthermore, County Clerk of Court Title offices have either closed completely, have limited hours, and services.  Work with your preferred title office to set procedures.

The Dealer Licensing Section and the Ohio Department Of Public Safety are at minimum staffing levels due to the instruction of Governor Mike DeWine. Please expect to experience delays in both phone, email response and application processing. With half of the motor vehicle dealers and auction owners expiring on March 31st, our first priority is to ensure all renewal applications get processed in a timely manner. All other applications will be processed accordingly. We encourage dealers to use Dealer Online Services to access available online transactions.
