John Glenn Astronomy Park

John Glenn Astronomy Park (JGAP)

Where Curiosity Meets the Cosmos

JGAP Hero ImageFor most of human history, looking into a truly dark night sky was an ordinary experience – and an extraordinary source of wonder. Today, artificial light has hidden much of that sky from view. But in the Hills of southeastern Ohio, something remarkable remains – Dark Skies.

Hocking Hills is home to some of Ohio's darkest skies. The John Glenn Astronomy Park was created to protect that experience and share it with everyone – from lifelong astronomers to children seeing the rings of Saturn through a telescope for the very first time.

The idea that would eventually become JGAP began in 2003 and grew through the vision, persistence and generosity of people who believed Hocking Hills offered an extraordinary opportunity for science, education, and exploration. In 2015, Ohio astronaut and stateman John Glenn gave permission for the park to carry his name – connecting his lifelong commitment to discovery and education with a place created to inspire those same qualities in generations to come.

A Different Way to Experience Hocking Hills

JGAP AstronomerAt JGAP, exploration doesn't end when the sun goes down.

Visitors can experience the moon, planets, stars, galaxies and other celestial wonders through powerful telescopes; join guided tours of the night sky, learn from knowledgeable volunteers and astro-photographers; or simply stand beneath one of Ohio's remarkable Dark Skies and look up.

The Astronomy Park is operated by Friends of Hocking Hills State Park, continuing a mission that connects nature, education, and exploration – on the trails and across the universe above.
