Some Places Have a Way of Staying With You – Hocking Hills is One of Them
For generations, people have come to walk beneath towering cliffs, follow trails through deep gorges and forests, discover waterfalls and wildlife, and experience a part of Ohio unlike anywhere else. And when people care deeply about a place, something happens: they want to help care for it. That idea is at the heart of Friends of Hocking Hills State Park.
Founded in 2003, the Friends brought together people who shared a love for Hocking Hills and a belief that protecting this extraordinary place is a responsibility we share. From the beginning, our mission has been to foster a partnership between outdoor enthusiasts and Hocking Hills State Park – supporting nature education, encouraging conservation, and helping preserve the Park for generations to come.
More Than Two Decades of Friendship
Over the years, that partnership has taken many forms. Friends have helped support Naturalist programs and wildlife care, Park safety and rescue equipment, visitor amenities, conservation initiatives, and improvements throughout Hocking Hills State Park. The organization played the defining role in bringing the John Glenn Astronomy Park (JGAP) to life – extending the wonder of Hocking Hills from its trails and waterfalls to the night sky.
The projects have changed. The Park has grown. Millions of people experience Hocking Hills State Park each year. But the idea behind the Friends group remains remarkably simple: People who love this place can help make a difference for it.
Today, Friends of Hocking Hills State Park continues to bring people, businesses, and community partners together to support the Park and the people who care for it – helping ensure that the experiences that inspire us today remain possible tomorrow. Because a place this special shouldn't have to do it alone.
We all need Friends. Hocking Hills does, too. [See Our Impact]
