ISHR 2025 Conference Information and Updates

Time is flying, and before we know it, we’ll be gathering in Copenhagen for the Twenty-Fifth Biennial Conference of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR) at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), July 22–25, 2025. At the moment, more than 250 attendees have registered.

ISHR announces the appointment of Dr. Michele Kennerly as editor-elect of ISHR’s journal, Rhetorica

ISHR announces the appointment of Dr. Michele Kennerly as editor-elect of ISHR’s journal, Rhetorica. She will assume the editorship on 1 January 2026. Kennerly is Associate Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences and of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at The Pennsylvania State University in the USA.

Voices Of Persuasion: Women Writers And Rhetoric In The Early Modern Italy

Sponsored in part by a grant from ISHR.

The conference aims to bring together scholars to explore the forms and methods of communication of women writers in the early modern period in Italy (1500-1699). This period marks a significant moment in the history of women European literature since it represents the beginning of their canonization. Papers will address the status and role of women in the field of rhetoric and the particular approach of women writers in the use of rhetoric in their literary production.

ISHR - Winner of the 2024 Rhetorica Prize

The Rhetorica prize committee is pleased to report that the winner of the 2024 prize for the best article published in Rhetorica is Michael R. Kearney, “Melanchthon's Didactic Genre and the Rhetoric of Reformation,” Rhetorica 40.1 (Winter, 2022): 23–42. The winner was chosen from among the twenty-four articles published in Rhetorica 39.3–41.1.
