First Annual Mike Morrison Memorial Open

October 3rd at

Mike Morrison MemorialThe inaugural Mike Morrison Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Monday, October 3 at Jefferson Country Club.

After Mike’s passing early this year, the Partners of Government Advantage Group, Kevin Futryk, Amanda Sines, and John Singleton, met to discuss what would be a fitting tribute to memorialize Mike. They knew Mike loved to play golf and was working to create an OLA Golf Outing for the last few years. They also knew Mike believed in the lobbying profession and its role in the governmental process.

“Mike was a presence around the Statehouse for over 35 years.  He was well respected because of his demeanor and approachability, his willingness to work with people, to mentor younger lobbyist, and maintain the integrity of the institution.  We can think of no better way to honor his memory than to help the OLA Scholarship Fund that is used to help educate and inform students about our profession.  Mike would be proud,” said Futryk.

The Ohio Lobbying Association has annually given two $2,000 scholarships to students from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. Kevin, Amanda, & John thought if they could find a way to marry golf with the OLA, it would be a fitting tribute to Mike.  A short time later, they proposed to the OLA that we create the Mike Morrison Memorial Golf Outing, to benefit the OLA Scholarship Fund.  Government Advantage Group is providing the seed funding to help get this event established in Mike’s memory, so annually people in the lobbying community can get together and share camaraderie while we help support the future of our profession.   This will also be an opportunity to honor the members of the lobbying community we have lost throughout the year.

“Mike was a great guy, a dedicated member of the OLA and I was proud to serve on the Board with him.  I can’t think of a better way to recognize him on behalf of the association than this new Mike Morrison Memorial Open.  Providing funding to increase the number of scholarships for students interested in public policy is a fitting legacy to one of the giants of Capitol Square,” said OLA President Mike Carroll.

All proceeds from the golf outing will benefit the OLA Scholarship fund.  We hope the revenue will allow us to expand the scholarship to other university programs and help more students fulfill their dreams.

In an effort to keep costs reasonable, the registration fee for this event allows for very little profit. The bulk of the scholarship proceeds will be generated by the many sponsorship opportunities offered.  There will be a reception following the outing and non-golfers are encouraged to attend. There will plenty of good food and drinks, just as Mike would have enjoyed.
