Student Spotlight - Julianna Henrichs

What are your injury and violence prevention interests?

Throughout my undergraduate studies in Criminal Justice, I have developed a keen interest in injury and violence prevention, primarily focused on firearm injuries and prevention. I have been fortunate to engage in research on firearm safety education in prenatal and pediatric settings alongside my mentor during this past year. I have had the opportunity to learn about the attitudes of parents and healthcare professionals towards firearm safety education being discussed in healthcare settings and determine if best practices of educational programs and guides are readily available. We hope that through our research, we can contribute evidence-based insights that can inform policy decisions aimed at reducing firearm-related injuries and deaths in youth. In addition to firearm safety education, I also have an interest in the impacts of domestic violence. I hope to contribute to efforts advocating for policies and programs that promote safety and justice within relationships and families.

Tell us about how you became connected with SAVIR.

I became connected with SAVIR through my mentor, Dr. Hannah Klein. She had reached out to me and informed me about the amazing work they do and their internship opportunity. Through this opportunity, I have been able to deepen my involvement in injury and violent prevention efforts while gaining experience in a professional setting and new learning opportunities. Working with passionate professionals in injury and violence prevention expanded my skills and knowledge, and I am grateful for this opportunity to work with them.

What motivates you every day?

What motivates me every day is the desire to make a positive difference, even if it is small, in the lives of others. Whether it is through my work, interactions with others, or striving to be the best version of myself, I find purpose in contributing to the well-being and advancement of others and society as a whole. Additionally, the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth motivates me, as I think that they are essential to making meaningful contributions. My family’s support and encouragement also motivate me every day, inspiring me to do my best and stay focused, despite adversity.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like going to the gym and working out. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I like spending time outside, whether it is going for a walk, going to the beach and relaxing, or going on a hike. Additionally, I love to read, mostly fiction and psychology related books. I find joy in traveling and trying new foods and experiences.

What are your career aspirations?

My career aspirations revolve around making a meaningful impact in the field of criminal justice and injury and violence prevention. I am planning on graduating with my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology this December. I aim to continue my education and earn my Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. I would like to potentially work for a government agency, such as the FBI. Ultimately, I hope to pursue a career path that aligns with my values, passions, and aspirations, allowing me to make a difference in the lives of others while continuously growing both personally and professionally.
