September Issue of 'The Parish Paper' Centers on Disaster Relief and the Congregation's Role

The September 2013 issue of The Parish Paper discusses how congregations may and should play a role in disaster relief.

In the Southern Ohio Synod, we work locally with Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio's Lutheran Disaster Relief coordinator, Mary Woodward, to train and recruit volunteers and identify needs of those affected by a disaster.

Over the past 15 years, Ohio Lutheran Disaster Relief has provided congregational preparedness training to prepare congregations to respond when a disaster strikes, including rebuilding homes and providing support to families in need.

The Southern Ohio Synod averages three disasters annually, which our congregations respond to generously with prayers and support. Mary Woodward says that besides prayer, the most effective gifts are monetary donations in the form of checks or gift cards. She also said, " God calls each of us to 'bear one another's burdens.' Learn to reach out in the most effective and efficient way possible by responding through Ohio LDR."

Please download the September issue of The Parish Paper below and share it with your congregation. If you do not have a disaster plan in place or would like to be better prepared to assist during a disaster, please contact Mary Woodward at 740.509.1132 or mwoodward_1@msn.com.
