Save the Date! Congregational Hunger Leaders' Day at Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Feb 28 2015

In 2015, hunger leaders will gather at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank's warehouse and distribution facility in Grove City where we'll hear from our own Bishop Suzanne Dillahunt, as well as have an opportunity to tour the Mid-Ohio Food Bank facility, meet other like-minded Lutherans, learn how to: effectively promote and maintain a hunger ministry, successfully apply for an ELCA World Hunger Grant, where and how to advocate for hunger issues, and how to get a hunger ministry off the ground if you're just starting out. There's somehthing to learn and apply for everyone!

ELCA Malaria Campaign Monthly News-November 2014

Together, we are chasing malaria out of Uganda and other places where this preventable disease has claimed too many lives. Your contributions--$190,000 from the Southern Ohio Synod and $12.9 million from all synods--continue to make a difference in families, villages and countries as fewer and fewer people need treatment for malaria.

Ebola Outbreak: Food Assistance in Liberia

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa continues to expand. There have now been more than 13,560 cases of infectedpersons and more than 4,950 deaths. While the disease itself continues to ravage communities and elicit fear and stigma, there are consequential impacts of the disease that are also severe, such as food shortage. 

ELCA Receives Over $2.5 million for Typhoon Haiyan Relief Efforts

Since Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines a year ago, impacting about 13 million people, members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and others have contributed more than $2.5 million for the ELCA’s humanitarian assistance for the storm's survivors. The funds are disbursed through Lutheran Disaster Response to support ongoing recovery efforts carried out by Lutheran World Relief and the National Council of Churches of the Philippines.

This month's Advocacy Update from the ELCA Advocacy Office in Washington, D.C. highlights advocacy efforts in the areas of Domestic Violence, Clean Water, Human Trafficing and Child Labor, and Election Day. 

ELCA Church Council Adds Youth and Young Adult, Disability Ministries to Campaign

The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) approved the implementation of this church’s Disability Ministries and Youth and Young Adult programs into Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA. Among its other actions, the council conferred the title of “emeritus” to the three former ELCA presiding bishops, elected a new member, considered budget matters, received updates, reports and more when it met November 7-10, 2014. The council serves as the ELCA’s board of directors. 

Dialogue on Peace with Iraqi Religious Leaders Includes ELCA Representative

Religious leaders from Iraq, Norway and the United States have made a commitment to research the prospects of building peaceful relations among people and states experiencing conflict and violence and to “normalize” such work and dialogues, according to the Rev. Stephen Bouman, executive director for congregational and synodical mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). 

Typhoon Haiyan - One Year Later: ELCA Disaster Response Update

One year later, we take a look back at a busy year of recovering and rebuilding. Thanks to your generosity in giving almost $2.5 million and because of our network of partners on the ground in the Philippines, Lutheran Disaster Response has been active in the recovery since the very beginning.

An Update from Portico re Legal Challenge of Housing Allowance for Clergy

GOOD NEWS!!! Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit, acted to preserve the housing allowance exclusion for clergy, following a year-long legal challenge from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Rather than rule on the issue of constitutionality, the Court determined that the Foundation lacked standing to challenge the housing allowance exclusion and returned the case to the U.S. District Court of Western Wisconsin with instructions to dismiss the lawsuit. - 

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio Bulletin Insert Highlights 2015 Program Offerings

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio has several exciting events coming up in 2015. Among those events are: Women's Spirituality Retreat January 30 - February 1 2015 at the Fleming Falls Retreat Center at Camp Mowana Big Ban Spring Break March 16-19 2015 at Lutheran Memorial Camp--This event is specially designed for young adults!
