Art Massey attended Cleveland South High School where he played football, basketball and baseball and earned 9 varsity letters. He attended Ohio University on a football scholarship. Art played two years of football and two years of baseball at Ohio University. He started playing soccer and was "All-Midwest" and an "All-American" selection. Art graduated from Ohio University in 1963 and earned a Masters Degree from Kent State University in 1968.
Art started teaching and coaching at Shaker Heights. He coached football, basketball, and baseball with Fred Heinlen from 1963 to 1968. He went to Cuyahoga Heights and became head baseball coach in 1969. In 28 years at Cuyahoga Heights he had more than 400 victories. They were the state runner-up in 1976, and appeared in three regional finals. Cuyahoga Heights participated in 11 district contests and Art won "Coach of the Year" in Greater Cleveland Coaches Association. Four Cuyahoga Heights players were All-State with three playing at the Division I College Program. Art is past President of the Greater Cleveland Coaches Association and IAABO (International Association of Approved Basketball Officials) Board 55. He retired from Cuyahoga Heights in 1996.
Art started officiating in 1966 and has worked at the Collegiate Level in both football and basketball. He is still working as a football referee at the Division I college level.
Art has been married to Marlene for the past 30 years and they have three sons; Mike, Mark and Matt. Marlene is a registered nurse, Mike is in law enforcement, Mark is an educator and Matt is in food service.
