Ed Rannow - 1974

Ed Rannow was a teacher/coach for more than four decades, with most in Athens County, including both Athens and The Plains High schools. A native of Oregon and a graduate of Pacific University, he coached in Oregon prior to being recruited by Ohio University's College of Education while earning a Master's degree at Columbia University in 1930. He was assigned as a supervising critic at The Plains HS where he coached football, basketball and baseball until 1944. He went to Athens HS where he continued coaching football, basketball and baseball.
Rannow went to Galion HS and served as head baseball coach guiding the 1950 team to a runner-up finish in the state tournament. He returned to Athens in the fall of 1953 where he continued to coach baseball until his retirement in 1971. His overall record was 180-117 and his record in the SEOAL was 91-29. He won 7 SEOAL titles, 8 Athen County league titles and 3 Northern League titles. The Athens High School honored Coach Rannow by naming the high school baseball field in his name in 1968. Coach Rannow passed away in 1983.
