Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministries, Chaplains’ Office

Gustavus Adolphus College

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time chaplain and director of campus ministries. This is an 11-month position reporting to the chaplain of the college. Review of applications will begin on May 14, 2018.

Duties and Responsibilities:

● Worship design, leadership, and preaching

○ Collaborate with students to create and lead new worship opportunities that meet the

evolving needs and desires of a denominationally, theologically, and ethnically diverse

group of Christian students.

○ Recruit, develop, and support student musicians and worship teams with a focus on

contemporary music and other innovative styles and formats.

○ In partnership with the chaplain of the college, cantor of Christ Chapel, and other

members of the campus ministry team, help coordinate and lead campus Daily

Sabbath and Sunday worship.

○ Preach and deliver gospel-centered messages that address the life experiences,

questions, and longings of undergraduate college students.

○ Perform/lead musically as needed and able.

○ Assist with Christmas in Christ Chapel worship services and other special liturgical

events.

● Programming and faith community development

○ Initiate, design, and implement programs that enable and encourage students to

explore their faith, ask questions, build Christian community across theological

difference, and engage meaningfully with the world.

○ Develop and lead a variety of Christian ministry programs, projects, initiatives, and

events.

○ Recruit and support a diverse group of student ministry leaders and work with various

student-led ministries to foster theological and spiritual formation, vocational

exploration, and leadership development.

○ Foster and model a spirit of Christian unity on campus by coaching United Christian

Ministries, meeting weekly with United leaders, and creating opportunities for campus

ministries and student religious organizations to work together.

○ Nurture a spirit of Christian community across denominational differences.

○ Build partnerships with student-led social justice organizations and provide

accompaniment and soul care for activists and allies from a variety of religious and

spiritual backgrounds.

○ Participate fully in campus efforts to foster a rich understanding of vocation.

○ Cultivate opportunities for students to collaborate in ministry with other departments

and organizations across campus.

● Spiritual care and ministry of presence

○ Provide spiritual care for students and build systems that support students who are

struggling with grief, mental health, relationship issues, and other life challenges.

○ Be present at religious and spiritual life events and activities.

○ Be available to and initiate contact with students throughout a variety of campus

settings, especially during evening hours, seeking both formal and informal

opportunities for relationship-building with students.

○ Reach out to students, including those not currently involved in organized Christian

communities at Gustavus, and help them connect to Christian ministries on campus.

○ Relate to specific areas of campus life, to be determined in conversation with the

chaplain of the college, such as Athletics, Greek Life, and Residential Life.

● All other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

● Rostered leader in good standing within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) or

in good standing on the roster of an ELCA full communion partner church: Presbyterian 

Church (USA), Reformed Church in America, United Church of Christ, The Episcopal Church,

The Moravian Church, and United Methodist Church.

● M.Div. with 3-5 years of ministry leadership experience and two or more years of ministry

experience with emerging adults.

● Exceptional capabilities in biblical interpretation, theological reflection, and worship design.

● Familiarity with the trends impacting faith formation in emerging adults.

● Experience designing and helping to lead contemporary worship.

● Passion for communicating the good news of God’s work in Jesus Christ to emerging adults in

a campus setting.

● Relational, creative, energetic, and collaborative leader with facility in recruiting and

developing student leaders.

● Skills in community organizing, team-building, and small group ministry development.

● Experience as a minister in a congregational setting or leadership in ministry in higher

education, outdoor ministry, social ministry, synodical ministry, or churchwide ministry.

● Culturally agile and proficient, dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● Ability to graciously lead Christian ministries within ecumenical and interfaith contexts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

● Familiarity with the traditions and values of Lutheran higher education and 1-2 years campus

ministry-related experience.

● Experience as a musician leading worship in a contemporary style.

● Adept at communicating through multiple social media platforms.
