Job Context Information

Strategic Communications is a team within the Mission Advancement unit responsible for designing, planning and executing effective and integrated marketing, public relations and digital media strategies for the churchwide expression of the ELCA.

Job Purpose

Working as part of the Strategic Communications team in the ELCA, the Communications Specialist supports the growing base of major, mid-level, and regular donors to churchwide ministries (such as ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran Disaster Response and more) by creating marketing materials, templates, proposals, reports in support of our major gifts and donor stewardship strategies, with the goal of inviting, inspiring, and thanking our generous supporters.

Job Responsibilities

1. Produce a variety of reports to be shared with donors, congregations and VIP audiences, including but not limited to letters, newsletters, white papers, annual report and presentations.

2. Write, edit and layout major gift proposals to be shared with high capacity donors. Assist the Development Communications team with the management of a bank of content (stories, impact data) and templates.

3.Develop PowerPoint presentations, write scripts, develop materials and create templates and tools for major gift officers and unit executives to use during donor visits and large events

4. Write, update and manage email and print acknowledgment letters for all churchwide ministries and funds.

5. Assist the Development Communications team and executive for Mission Advancement with special projects, internal communications and other duties as assigned. Assist the team with the implementation of marketing plans, including direct mail campaigns, e-marketing campaigns, print materials and more.

6. Track, record and analyze results of work, including setting goals and demonstrating progress towards key metrics, including revenue, donor retention and donor satisfaction.

Physical Effort.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. Experience and Skills:
1. Experience and proven ability to write for a variety of media (print, web, email) and audiences (executives, donors, leaders, and general public) with different tones, voices and techniques.

2. Strong verbal communication skills to be able to plan and strategize with colleagues in multiple levels of the organization, including executives.

3. Strong organizational skills with ability to create and manage large volumes of content with minimal direction and guidance under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment

4. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Very organized and able to manage projects from conception through completion.

5. Expertise in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel required. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat) and CRM software (Blackbaud, etc.) preferred.

 

Required certifications or licenses:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field and minimum of two years of experience, preferably in a nonprofit fundraising/communications role.
