ELCA Advocacy: Urge Congress to Pass Border Funding for the Safety of Vulnerable Children

On July 23, Sen. Barbara Mikulski proposed an emergency spending bill in the appropriations committee that would provide $2.7 billion to address the influx of immigrant children. This legislation is one of several ongoing attempts to address the humanitarian crisis at the border. This funding proposal comes in the wake of a proposal in the House to roll back the Trafficking Victims Protection and Reauthorization Act of 2008 (TVPRA) and deny due process to immigrant children.

The crisis at the border has drawn broad attention from many denominations across the country. Last week, Presiding Bishop Eaton reflected that, “The children entering the United States have fled because their lives are in danger. God is their ultimate hope, and we can be a sign of that hope.” As Lutherans inspired by faith, we need to help break the partisan gridlock in Congress and increase funding to address the crisis before they leave for August recess.

Contact your Members of Congress and urge them to: pass a clean funding measure that protects vulnerable children, ensures that their due process rights are preserved, and addresses the root causes of their flight.
