A Message from the CEO

Summer greetings from Helping Hand House!

I was reminded over the past few months that “changing the world starts at home.” Meaning healing, growth, transformation, and activism starts inside each one of us then radiates out to make a difference in the world. When we are inspired, we inspire others! That inspiration has already exceeded our expectations halfway through 2024! Because of your generosity and inspiration, we were able to serve 80 families towards their journey of ending their crises of homelessness in 2024 thus far. That is 126 moms and dads + 180 kiddos that have renewed hope, new dreams, and a path forward to their new future! What an incredible way to kick off our 40th year of serving our community, ending homelessness one family at a time! We look forward to doubling those numbers by the end of the year. The struggle is real in this current economy. The stories heartbreaking. But even just a little bit of help goes such a long way whether it be diapers and wipes or household supplies to beds and ultimately finding a place to call home.

Read on to get a glimpse of what we’ve been up to around “The House” while also getting ready for much more to come as we wrap up our 40 for 40 Campaign, prepare for “Back to School” for the kiddos, and then launch right into our holiday festivities. Be sure to follow us on social media to stay informed of all the excitement!

Our gratitude for your support is infinite. We could not do what we do without the heart and passion of our community. Your love in action is instrumental in enabling us to provide help and service to our families. Together we continue to make a positive impact and have the beautiful opportunity to witness families empower themselves through our various programs. New Hope. New Homes. New Futures.

In Community,

Family Spotlight

Andrea was desperate to turn her life around when she found out she was having twins and active in addiction. She had already previously lost her two year old to foster care. Thankfully, she had made the choice to stop using drugs and was able to get her two year old back and continue with a healthy pregnancy. However, she was now homeless. We were able to get her into a hotel for a safe and warm place to stay right before she had her twins. Once out of the hospital at two weeks old, Andrea was able to move into one of our emergency shelter homes while she looked for daycare, employment, and a home of her own. At a month old, she found daycare for all the children, employment, and reunited with her children’s father living close to family. Meeting Andrea where she was at, Helping Hand House was able to provide the exact support she needed to make her dreams a reality by bringing her family back together again. New hope! New home! New future!

Service Spotlights

Helping Hand House was able to put its mission in motion at PWIPM’s annual Steps of Hope 5k raising money for a cause. Runners, walkers, and furry friends joined together at the beautiful Tacoma’s Chambers Bay Loop to complete the 3.1 miles through the park with amazing views of the mountain, water, and golf course. A huge thank you to Bell Laboratories and WA State Pest Management Association for sponsoring the event!

Trilogy Serves, a local housing community, blew us away with a supply drive donating nearly 170 household items that will meet the immediate needs of our families. It was like Christmas with daily Amazon deliveries! This is one of many ways groups and organizations are able to come together to make an impact!

40 For 40 Campaign Update

We are nearing the end of our 40 for 40 Campaign. Since April, $25,468 has been contributed towards our goal of $40,000! With two weeks to go, we are still believing we can raise the remaining $15,000 by our 40th birthday. We know with busy lives, we cannot always be the “boots on the ground” engaging in the transformative work that forever changes the lives of families and children, but there is the opportunity to still be a part of that work by giving a few dollars to help those who can. Every dollar makes a difference…

  • $25 provides baby items for our families
  • $50 provides transportation for a family member to travel to and from work
  • $100 provides personal hygiene items for families in our Emergency Shelters
  • $250 provides a week of groceries
  • $500 provides 5 nights in a hotel so a family can stabilize and plan their next steps

The impact you will be making is facilitating the transformation of real lives in Pierce County and igniting a family’s hope as they take the first step toward their transformational brighter future, ending their crises of homelessness!
