Remembering Our Friend and Colleague, Dr. Dave Barry


Dave BarryThe specialty of emergency medicine lost a compassionate physician, dedicated educator, mentor, pioneer, military officer, and colleague in J. David Barry, MD, FACEP, who passed away on September 2, 2022.

Dr. Barry graduated from the Uniformed Services University and completed his residency training at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in emergency medicine (EM) and his fellowship in medical toxicology at UC San Diego. He served in the US Army and retired as a Colonel after 25 years of service to his country with multiple wartime deployments.

Dr. Barry trained and mentored hundreds of EM residents and medical students serving as an Associate Program Director at BAMC, the Program Director at Naval Center Portsmouth, and Director of the Board Review Course for the American College of Medical Toxicology. He became the Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine at the Long Beach VA Medical Center and a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at University of California, Irvine after his military retirement.

Dr. Barry was a leader in the Government Services Chapter, serving as President from 2012- 2013, Chair of the Awards Committee, and was actively involved in ACEP Council for over a decade. He was elected to the ABEM Board in 2020 and was co-editor for MyEMCert.

Dr. Barry touched the lives of countless individuals as an educator, physician, role model, mentor, colleague, pioneer, friend, and devoted husband and father. He shaped the future of military medicine across the country with his leadership, vision, enthusiasm, and dedication.

The Government Services Chapter and American College of Emergency Physicians remembers with gratitude the many contributions made by J. David Barry, MD, FACEP, as one of the leaders in emergency medicine and the greater medical community. We extend our condolences and gratitude to his family, friends, and colleagues for his tremendous service to his country, the specialty of emergency medicine, and to the patients and physicians of the DoD, Veteran’s Affairs, and the United States.
