House Leaders Aim to Pass All 12 Spending Bills Before August

They want to capitalize on the slim Republican majority they still have

Last week, House Republican leaders announced they will prioritize the passage of all 12 fiscal 2025 appropriations bills before the start of the August recess.

What's next: Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) told Republican members last week to prepare to start moving bills on the floor the first week of June, starting with the Military Construction-VA bill.

  • That bill advanced out of committee last Thursday.

  • The chamber will then focus on the defense authorization bill the following week.

With Republicans continuing to have a slim majority in the House, leadership is looking for ways to limit opposition to spending legislation. House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) told reporters last month that earmark guidance would be out shortly as appropriators rush to get their fiscal 2025 bills underway, and the goal would be to block projects that could cause them headaches back in their district.

“Tom Cole and his committee are already hard at work to get those bills out of committee, and then we’re going to be bringing those bills to the floor,” Scalise said. “With a one-seat majority, soon to be a two-seat majority, it’s going to be all-hands-on-deck to get that passed.”
