Trump Selects J.D. Vance as his Vice Presidential Running Mate

Vance, once a Trump critic, is an ambitious ideologue who relishes the spotlight

Former President Donald Trump tapped Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio to be his running-mate as the Republican National Convention was gaveled into order on Monday, selecting the former Marine as his pick for vice president two days after surviving an attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania. Vance, a one-time harsh critic of Trump whose unexpected embrace of the former president’s politics fueled his rapid rise, quickly emerged as a prodigious fund-raiser and defender of Trump since arriving in the Senate last year.

The announcement came amid anticipation that Trump would break from tradition and deliver a spontaneous speech to the convention — what would be his first public appearance since he was wounded in an assassination attempt — as the party gathered to formally nominate him to run a third time for president.

At once festive and defiant, the delegates gathered for the four-day convention in an atmosphere of heightened tensions and security. By every measure, the event has been reshaped by the attack on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa.
