Iran Says Missile Strikes Matched U.S. Bombing Action

After the assault, hopes for de-escalation rise

On Monday, Iran launched missile strikes on a U.S. military base in Qatar in retaliation for the American bombing of its nuclear facilities—an escalation that further inflamed tensions across the region.

Iran launched 19 missiles at the sprawling, Al Udeid Air Base with one striking the facility but causing no casualties, a Qatari military official said late Monday. Officials added that the country's airspace had been secured.

A Department of Defense (DoD) official told Newsweek on Monday, "I can confirm al Udeid Air Base was attacked by short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles originating from Iran today. At this time, there are no reports of U.S. casualties. We are monitoring this situation closely and will provide more information as it becomes available."
