A Culture of Security: Preventing DEA Scheduled Medication Diversion in the ASC

People generally believe that DEA-controlled medication diversion is something that won’t affect them. However, as a pharmacist consultant, you routinely encounter signs of diversion in clients. Sometimes it’s a new client with imprecise paperwork; other times it’s a long-time client who requires constant vigilance and shows unusual behavior. Often, it involves a missing fentanyl at the end of the day. The goal is to share expertise and experiences to demonstrate how to establish a “Culture of Security,” so individuals can not only identify diversion but also create a strong deterrent to anyone attempting to exploit a loophole in their practices.
