What is a Doctor of Optometry?

Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system. They perform eye exams; prescribe eyeglasses and sun glasses and contact lenses. Additionally certain optometrists specialize in low vision aids, vision therapy and medicines to treat eye diseases.
Eye Doctors examine eyes in order to diagnose eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disorders; systemic diseases like hypertension and diabetes; and vision conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
The New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP) is made up of eye doctors from every county in the state including Bergen County, Monmouth County, Middlesex County, Morris County, Essex County and Mercer County.
