OSTEOFACTS | Closing The Decade: Our accomplishments & gratitude
December 27, 2019
Thank You OOA Members!
We are so grateful for your membership and wish you the best in 2020! Because of your support, the OOA has enjoyed a successful year. While it’s hard to encapsulate 525,600 minutes into one email, we’ve done our best to give you the highlights.
As you plan for next year, consider furthering your engagement with your professional family. There are lots of ways to DO your part.

New Member BenefitsTo enhance the value of your membership, the OOA partnered with organizations to help you professionally and personally. Through a partnership with ISMIE, OOA members receive a 10 percent discount on professional liability insurance. This discount can be stacked with additional offerings for which you may be eligible, such as new physician or loss-free discounts. The OOA extended its partnership with Northwestern Mutual so that all OOA members can receive a free comprehensive financial planning consultation, valued at over $2,000. A renewed agreement with Eric Jones Law Group provides a 25 percent discount on legal services. Other membership benefits include reduced annual workers’ compensation costs, favorable pricing, payment, and purchasing terms for vaccines, a free consultation to identify and solve potential cash flow issues in your office, and more! Get the details to maximize your membership benefits. (And renew your membership online too!) |
Legislative VictoriesWhile there’s still a lot of work ahead, we’ve been able to stave off HB 177, a bill that would expand APRN scope of practice. The legislation eliminates collaboration agreements between APRNs and physicians and permits APRNs to practice independently. We expect further action on the bill when the General Assembly convenes after the holidays, but the OOA will continue to advocate for the physician-led health care team for optimum care and patient safety. The OOA also issued testimony advocating to ban sun lamp tanning for minors, oppose the legalization of fireworks discharge, establish the Rare Disease Advisory Council, and much more. Your professional home also successfully opposed new CME requirements as a condition of licensure. |

New Student ResourceAs the AOA match becomes a thing of the past, the OOA sought to create a first-of-its-kind resource that strengthens the osteopathic continuum in Ohio. This new webpage is specifically for medical students looking to train at an ACGME program with osteopathic recognition (OR). The page, located under the Student tab on the navigation bar, provides a map that represents every OR program in the state with an OOA logo. Basic program info appears when you click on each program. In addition to the map, there’s an alphabetical list of all OR programs statewide with a link to the program webpage, contact information for the program director, specialty, the number of OR slots available, and more! |

Holler if You’re a Scholar!Scholar Teacher launched this year as a faculty development tool, particularly for graduate medical education programs as required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The latest in the Scholar Series consists of several 15-20 minute videos that highlight thoracic landmarks (muscular, skeletal), assessment of rib dysfunction and treatment. Scholar Teacher, which is free to use, provides flexibility. For example, each video could be viewed individually at a faculty meeting or the entire series can be offered as faculty development curriculum that physician educators can use on their own. Free online CME credit is available through the AOA for any DO who views the series and completes a post-session questionnaire. Special thanks to OOA Past President Robert W. Hostoffer, Jr., DO, who established and developed the Scholar Series. |

Osteopathic LeadershipThank you to Ohio DOs who lead this profession, including OOA President Charles D. Milligan, DO, and the entire OOA and OOF Board of Trustees. Your dedication makes osteopathic distinctiveness thrive. We also thank national leaders such as OOA Immediate Past President Jennifer J. Hauler, DO, of Tipp City, who was elected to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees in July. Hauler, a family and emergency physician, is vice president and chief medical officer at Premier Health in Dayton. She serves alongside Robert W. Hostoffer, Jr, DO, of Cleveland, who has been on the AOA Board since July 2017. William J. Burke, DO, concluded his term on the AOA Board this year after nine years of service. Burke, dean of the OU-HCOM in Dublin, continues to lead the Osteopathic International Alliance, and is currently Board chair. Adam Coridan, DO, who graduated from OU-HCOM in May, also completed his year as the student trustee on the AOA Board. In September, Terry A. Johnson, DO, became the first osteopathic state senator in Ohio history! He is a practicing family physician, medical educator, and retired military officer who served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2011-2018. |

Building a FoundationWith your generosity, the Ohio Osteopathic Foundation supported students, new graduates, and physicians. Through the OOA’s charitable arm, we provided 266 white coats to the newest members of the osteopathic family. Each member of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 2023 received their first white coat, complete with OOA armpatch, compliments of the OOF. And each member of the Class of 2019 received an OOA umbrella (ensuring they stay under the osteopathic umbrella) at graduation this past spring. OOF also donated to the Ohio Physician Wellness Coalition, which launched a new website as well as free video lectures dedicated to improving wellness for physicians throughout the state. Memorial donations to the OOF support osteopathic research and education and simultaneously honor loved ones. We remember the members and friends of the profession who passed this year. |
