SB 129: Optometric Surgery Legislation Update
As we reported in the summer, SB 129 was introduced that would dramatically expand the scope of practice of optometrist in Ohio including laser and other surgical procedures. We have developed a one-page overview that outlines the specific provisions of the bill and how you can participate.
Since its introduction in June—and subsequent assignment to the Senate Health Committee—there have been no hearings or other formal action on the bill.
The OOS leadership participated in a meeting with the bill sponsor, Senator Cirino, Senate Health Chair, Dr. Steve Huffman and representatives from the optometric association. At the end of the meeting, the sponsor asked both sides to provide him with additional information and data as the next step in the process. We are currently working to do so.
As additional activity happens, we will inform OOS membership immediately and let you know what action is appropriate.
